Hydrallantois and hydramnios Flashcards

1
Q

hydrallantois

A
  • gross accumulation of fluid in allantoic sac
  • 90% of bovine hydrops cases
  • d/t placental dysfunction
  • clear, watery, amber fluid
  • greatly extended abdomen on both sides
  • on rectal exam, can just find fluid (50-70 gallons at times)
  • usually cannot palpate fetus or placentomes

  • anomalous fetus- lack of swallowing reflex
  • syrupy, viscid fluid
  • may not be noticed until parturition

Q

Procedure with Induced abortion

A
  • put cow in box stall where she can be watched and give prostaglandin and/or dexamethasone
  • check on every 12 hrs = feeling for when cervix is dilated
  • Once dilated, puncture fetal membrane to release fluids (Keep mouth closed!)
  • After that point, check until dilated enough to deliver calf -> often will be a small, dead calf

Q

Is a C-section a good way to treat bovine hydrops? Why or why not?

A

It is not a good way to treat bovine hydrops.

Walls of uterus are super stretched d/t amount of fluid and will not stitch back together well.

Also, the amount of fluid that will be pouring out could get into the abdominal cavity, causing further problems
