Observations Flashcards
Naturalistic
Research method that involves observing subjects in their natural environment. Carried out in filed experiments.
Controlled observation.
Controls all factors that alter behaviour, so avoids CVs.
Participant observation.
Observer is / pretending to be part of the group they’re observing.
Non-participant observation.
Observer isn’t part of the of the group being studied.
Un-structured observation.
Observer notes everything down that happens.
Structured observation.
Observer imposes a structure on their observation (checklists) to meet the aims of their observations.
Covert.
P’s don’t know they are being observed.
Overt.
P’s know they are being observed.
Event sampling.
Events are recorded each time it happens. Observer uses observation schedules.
Time sampling.
Chose to observe behaviours at different times.
Time Point sampling.
Observer records what the P’s are doing in fixed intervals e.g. Every 10th minute.
Time Event sampling.
Record something every time it happens e.g. During the first 10 minutes.
Coding Frame.
Analyse qualitative data. Note P’s behaviour and identify categories of behaviour so comparisons can be made.
