Correlations Flashcards
What is a correlational study??
A process in which the data is analysed and the strength and direction of a relationship between two variables is measured.
Why do we have correlational studies?? (Pro)
Allows us to see if variables are related when it would be unethical to test experimentally.
Allows us to see the strength of the relationship between the variables.
How is a correlation shown??
Scatter graphs
What data can only be conducted in a correlation??
Quantitive data
Correlation coefficient
Mathematical calculation of the strength and direction of a correlation.
Between -1 and +1 measures the relationship.
Correlations can be categorised into positive, negative and zero correlations.
Positive correlation
As one variable increases so does the other variable.
Strong positive correlation equals +1
Negative correlation
There is a relationship.
As one variable increases the other variable decreases.
Strong negative correlation equals -1.
Zero correlation
There is no clear relationship.
Zero correlation equals zero.
Cons of a correlation
Makes us think there is no relationship between variables when in fact there is-(Curvy linear)
We cannot draw conclusions about the cause and effect from correlational data as there is no IV or DV.
