Observations Flashcards
Obtaining quantitative and qualitative data
Pre determined behavioural categories and tally
Short para w as much detail eg pick, observe for set period of data and write as much data
Controls
More than one OBS= agree about sped behaviours
Test correlation betw data
Yes= high inter rated reliability so strength
Event sampling
Pre established behaviours and record every time they occur but can’t be used for large pop as you may miss certain info
Time sampling
Periodic but stereotypical as not rep of behaviour
Structured
Standardised p eg researcher decides how child interacts via OBS in lab, spec toys
+ High control over v,easy to rep so check reliability
- low eco v, artificial enviro so less likely natural due to dc
Naturalist
Natural and expected to be observed eg children’s comments in classroom to see lev of happiness
+High eco v, authentic behaviour so gen
-lack of control over v so diff to rep and establish reliability
Ppt
Part of situation eg part of training session
+Special insights and depth rep of behaviour
- may loose obj as part of group, diff to rep and loose v
Non ppt
Not part and sit away eg in icebreaker activity
+Greater obj, when inapp to be inv
- loose sense of dynamic could lack detail
Covert
Don’t know they’re being observed eg recording info about helpful ppl in bus
+ High int validity as ppt unaware so natural behaviour
- ethical issues, not being able to give informed consent
Overt
Know ABT observation eg walks in classroom and begins observing teacher
+IC - low int v, likely to change behaviour as DC and social desirability
