Observational Learning (Bandura) Flashcards
What is observational learning?
Learning through observing others and copying
What are the four stages of observational learning?
Attention
Retention
Motor production
Motivation
What is the attention stage of observational learning?
Performers need to watch an accurate demonstration of the skill
What are the important factors of the attention stage?
Make sure performer takes note of relevant cues
The more attractive the demo is, more likely it is to be copied
Make the model stand out by making it loud, bright, attractive, making it stand out
Point out the reason why you are asking the performer to learn the skill
What is the retention stage of observational learning?
Creating a mental picture of the skill required
What are the important factors of the retention stage?
Make sure the leaner can recall the demonstration in the memory by breaking down any info into chunks and repeat it
Make sure demo is accurate and clear
Use of role model or expert player to ensure accurate demo
Learner should attempt the skill asap
What is the motor production stage of observational learning?
The physical movement to perform the skill
Learners must have the ability to be able to perform the skill
What are the important factors of the motor production stage?
Give a task that is set at the same level of ability as the performer
Make sure the task can be understood
In the early stages of practice, success should be ensured by setting easier tasks then progressively make them harder
The player should be given time to practice and learn the skill before moving on
What is the motivation stage of cognitive learning?
The learners need, want, or desire to replicate the skill
What are the important factors of the motivation stage?
Motivation can be given to the performer by giving praise and rewards
Give positive feedback and use reinforcement
