What is visual guidance?
Guidance that can be seen, such as a demonstration
What should the coach do to make sure information from the demonstration is taken in by performer?
Repeat demonstration
Make demonstration accurate
Key point of skill should be highlighted
Advantages of visual guidance
Can be used to highlight a specific weakness
Shows what the skill should look like
Can be used in conjunction with verbal guidance
Disadvantages of visual guidance
Demonstration must be accurate, otherwise will be copied incorrectly
Performer must have the ability to perform the skill
If too much information is given, performer may become confused
What is verbal guidance?
Using words to explain a task
Advantages of verbal guidance
Helps build mental image in memory
Useful for more experienced players
More time efficient
Disadvantages of verbal guidance
If too much information is given, then it may cause confusion
Performer may lose concentration unless coach makes info brief, relevant and meaningful
Cannot be used as easily for beginners
What is manual guidance?
Physically supporting a performer during a movement
Advantages of manual guidance
Helps eliminate factor of danger when performing skill
Helps to build confidence of the performer
Fear and anxiety associated with dangerous or difficult tasks may be reduced if the support is on hand to the performer
Disadvantages of manual guidance
Can have detrimental effect on performance if over used
Performer may become reliant on the support
May lose confidence when support has gone and can’t perform skill anymore
Close proximity of coach may be off putting
What is manual guidance?
Using artificial aids to help a performer
Advantages of mechanical guidance
Builds confidence
Eliminates danger
Gives a feel for the movement
Can be used with athletes who have disabilities or are recovering from injuries
Disadvantages of mechanical guidance
If used for too long, can interfere with feel of the task
Performer may become reliant on guidance
Motivation may be lost if performer believes they aren’t performing task independently
