- Point out person and describe their most noticeable characteristics ( hight, weight, hair color, etc.)
- Get confirmation that the listener knows who you are taking about
Why do you need confirmation when identifying someone?
Because they could not now who you are talking about, or they could think that you are talking about someone else
If the person is present and within sight, how do you begin? What do you do with your eyebrows
If they are Present, begin your sentences with raised eyebrows and the see sign “k” shape starting at your eyes.
- Eyebrows up
Descrive the order in which identifying characteristics are given (5)
- Gender
- Height
- Body Type
- Color of Hair
- Hairstyle
If features distinguish the person from others in that situation, when are they mentioned? What are some of these characteristics?
- Race, Distincitve facial features, eyeglasses, jewelry, clothing, and if they are sitting, standing or singing.
- You say it right after gender
When can you proceed with your comments about the person you’ve identified?
When the listener nods or gives conformation of the person you are describing
How is identifying someone who is not present different?
- When they are no present, your eyes are raised and you do the “know” or “do you know” sign
What kinds of additional information can you provide to help the listener know who you are talking about?
- Occupation, personal qualities, habits, and the person relationship to other people the listener knows
Why are sings fro some countries and ethnic groups that were previously acceptable now considered “politically incorrect?”
Because they would use obvious characteristic features.
Ex. Chinese, Japanese, and Korea people would make reference to the shape of their eye
What has been proposed as a solution to this problem? What are two reasons why thing “solution” might not work?
The most common solution has been to adopt the sign that the Deaf people in that country use for themselves
- A newer sign could mean something else in ASL.
Ex. Sign for Japan looks like the ASL sign for napkin
