Obesity Flashcards
What are the health risks associated with obesity?
cancer; gallbladder disease; renal failure; stroke; heart failure; atherosclerosis; DM; HT
What are the proteins/peptides secreted by adipocytes called?
adipokines
What inflammatory mediators do adipcytes release?
CRP; TNF-alpha; IL-6
Give an example of the overlap of macrophage and adipocyte function in atherosclerosis?
macrophages can store fat and become foam cells
What are the triggers for adipocytes releasing inflammatory mediators?
ER stress caused by infection or excess nutrients (obesity)
What happens as a result of adipocytes releasing inflam mediators?
attracts macrophages which then infiltrate the adipose tissue which increases the inflammation even more which causes insulin resistance
What else does inflammation cause aside from insulin resistance?
hyperlipidaemia causing atherosclerosis
Why would the body want hyperlipidaemia in response to inflam?
hyperlipiaemia is beneficial in fighting infection in the short term
What is the only drug available in the UK for obesity?
orlistat
What is the moa of orlistat?
inihibiots lipases, thereby blocking the absorption of dietary fat
What are the 3 most common bariatric procedures?
adjustable gastric band; roux-en-Y gastric bypass; vertical sleeve gastrectomy
What is adaptive thermogenesis?
fall in BMR with fall in weight- weight loss is seen as a threat to survival
