What are classifications of obesity
Normal: 19-24.9
Overweight: 25-29.9
Obese
- Class 1: 30
- Class 2: >35
- Class 3: > 40
What are goals of weight loss
5-10% of initial body weight
- increases life expectancy
- improves blood sugar control in DM
- lowers BP and cholesterol
- Improves chronic Gerd, OSA
- Can decrease number of meds
Initial goal is not ideal body weight but to lose 5-10% of body weight with 1-2lbs/week
What medications can be given for weight loss
BMI >30 or >27 with medical risks
GLP-1 receptor agonists
- semaglutide
- tirzepatide
Sympathomimetic drugs
- phentermine
Drugs altering fat digestion
- orlistat
What are the types of bariatric surgery
BMI >40 or >35 with medical risks
Restrictive
- Adjustable gastric banding
- sleeve gastrectomy
Combo restrictive + malabsorption
- Roux-en-Y
What vitamins are recommended after bariatric surgery
Prenatals/daily Multivitamin
Folic acid 0.8 to 1mg
Calcium citrate 1200mg
Vit D 3000 IU/D
Elemental iron 40-65mg
Vitamine B12 350-500mcg
When can you conceive after bariatric surgery
12-24 months
Screen for ferritin, Fe, CBC, B12, thiamine, folate, Ca, and vitamin D
