Obedience
following the commands of someone with authority, or the rules or laws of our society
Constructive obedience
when there is compliance with the orders of an authority that results in a positive outcome
Destructive obedience
when there is compliance with the orders of an authority that results in a negative outcome
Influences of obedience:
- Social proximity
- Group pressure
- Legitimacy of authority figures
Social proximity
closeness between two or more people/physical distance and closeness of relationship which makes it easier to obey an order when victim is distant and not visible
Group pressure
exists when there is little to no group support for resisting authority figures and more likely to be obedient where there is group support (encouragement)
Legitimacy of authority figures
authority is perceived as being legitimate and having power which inclines likelihood of obedience happening
