Factors influencing individual and group behaviour Flashcards

Culture

Status

Zimbardo (experiment)
The Stanford Prison Experiment was a psychological study conducted in 1971 by Philip Zimbardo to investigate the effects of situational variables on human behaviour. It was a two-week simulation of a prison environment that examined the effects of role-playing, labelling, and social expectations on participants’ reactions and behaviours.
Groupthink
a way of thinking by individual members of a group characterised by a strong tendency to seek agreement when decision-making or problem-solving
Deindividuation
reduced self-awareness, inhibition, feelings of personal responsibility and inner restraint that can occur when in a group or crowd
Anonymity
behaviours allow them to be unidentifiable and feelings of less accountability “everyone else is doing it”
Attention
focused on events in the environments and lack of focus on internal thoughts. Acts of impulsivity
Milgram (experiment)
The Milgram experiment was a series of controversial social psychology experiments conducted by Stanley Milgram at Yale University from 1961 to 1963. The experiment sought to investigate the extent to which people would obey the orders of an authority figure, even if those orders conflicted with their own moral conscience
Asch (experiment)
The Asch conformity experiments were a series of studies conducted by social psychologist Solomon Asch in the 1950s. The experiments investigated how individuals would conform to the opinions of a majority group, even when those opinions were clearly incorrect
