OB Lecture 6 Leadership Flashcards
Difference between leadership and management?
Leadership: ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals
Management: use of authority inherent in designated formal rank to obtain compliance from organizational members
Are leadership and management both important for organizational success?
Yes
What is the Single Factor Approach to leadership?
theories that consider personality, social, phisical or intellectual traits
–> trait theories
- e.g. big five personality framework
–> Trait theories can predict leadership, but they are better at predicting leader emergence than effectiveness
What is the contingency approach to leadership?
- it depends on the environment
Three key theories:
- Fiedler’s Model
- Hersey and Blanchard’s Situational Leadership Theory
- Path-Goal Theory
-Fiedler’s Model
interaction of situation and leader characteristics predicts leader effectiveness
For instance, imagine that you’ve just started working at a new company, replacing a much-loved leader who recently retired. You’re leading a team who views you with distrust (so your Leader-Member Relations are poor). The task you’re all doing together is well defined (structured), and your position of power is high because you’re the boss, and you’re able to offer reward or punishment to the group.
The most effective leader in this situation would be( high LPC )– that is, a leader who can focus on building relationships first.
Dark side of charisma
- dilutes judgment
- is addictive
- fosters collective narcissism
Transactional leaders
Transactional leadership is a style of leadership in which leaders promote compliance by followers through both rewards and punishments. Unlike transformational leaders, those using the transactional approach are not looking to change the future, they look to keep things the same. Leaders using transactional leadership as a model pay attention to followers’ work in order to find faults and deviations.
transformational leaders
- inspire followers to transcend their own self-interest for the good of the organization; they can have a profound and extraordinary effect on followers
successful leaders are
both transactional and transformational
