Abnormal implantation of the placenta on the lower half of the uterine wall. Bleeding begins when the lower uterus contracts/dilates in labor. There is painless, bright red bleeding (indicates active bleeding).

In the improper separation of the placenta, this is characterized by sharp, tearing pain, and the development of abdominal pain/distention. There is NO vaginal bleeding due to blood being trapped between the placenta and uterine wall.
