What factors effect the decision to deliver a baby in the field or transport the patient to the hospital?
- number of previous deliveries
- frequent contractions less than 2 minutes apart lasting 30-45 seconds
- crowning of bluging
- mother has the urge to push or mover her bowels
Once delivery has occurred, what should be done with the umbilical cord?
Clamp the cord at 6” and 8” from the navel and cut between the clamps
When shall an APGAR score be obtained?
at 1 and 5 minutes after delivery
What is a prolapsed cord?
occurs when the umbilical cord presents itself outside the uterus while the fetus is still inside.
What position will the provider place a pregnant person in whose presents signs of a prolapsed cord?
knee-chest position
What should all providers do for a prolapsed cord?
DO NOT attempt to push the cord back into the vagina. Wrap the cord in a saline soaked dressing.
What shall all providers do when faced with a newborns limb as the presenting part?
DO NOT attempt delivery and transport immediately to the closest appropriate facility.
What should all providers do during a breech presentation if the head is not delivered within 3 minutes?
place a gloved hand in the vagina, with your palm toward the newborns face utilizing a “V” technique with your fingers. push the vaginal wall away from the newborns face.
What is uterine inversion?
condition when the uterus protrudes through the vagina with the placenta still attached.
How do all providers perform management of post-partum vaginal hemorrhaging?
apply a firm uterine massage starting from the pubis toward the umbilicus clockwise.
What does APGAR stand for?
Activity, Pulse, Grimace, Appearance, Respiration
