What is OARRS?
OARRS is the controlled substance database of outpatient prescriptions for Ohio residents. (can see other controlled-substances patients are on)
Before dispensing an outpatient prescription for an OARRS drug (including gabapentin), what does a pharmacist need to review?
a pharmacist must review the patient’s OARRS report covering at least a one year time period
a pharmacist must review the patient’s OARRS report covering at least a one year time period in any of the following circumstances:
- A patient adds a different or new OARRS reported drug to their therapy that was not previously included. A new gabapentin prescription does not require a pharmacist to check OARRS.
2) An OARRS report for the patient has not been reviewed within the previous 12 months
3) A prescriber is located outside the usual geographical area of the pharmacy
4) The patient is from outside the usual geographic area
5) The pharmacist has reason to believe the patient has received prescriptions for OARRS drugs from **more than one prescriber **in the previous 3 months. Exception: Those prescriptions from prescribers that practice in the same physical location.
6) The patient is showing signs of potential abuse or diversion. This may include early refills, over-utilization, appears intoxicated, appears overly sedated, or asks for a specific drug by street name, markings, color, or identifying marks.
7) Medical marijuana must be reported within 5 minutes of sale.

If an OARRS report is not available, what should pharmacist do?
the pharmacist shall use his/her professional judgment whether it is appropriate to dispense the prescription based on all other information and data available at the time of dispensing.
A pharmacist is not required to dispense a prescription of doubtful, questionable or suspicious origin. Every prescription must be for a legitimate medical purpose. True or False

This OARRS report request must also include border state prescription monitoring reports
