True
Does “Dispense as Written” or “DAW” have to be handwritten when using an EPTS?
No it does not. However, DAW cannot be the automatic default
Does a prescription transmitted by an EPTS have to have a signature?
NO
Electronic prescriptions for controlled substances can be sent computer to computer, but NOT:
computer to fax machine
If the prescriber wants to fax a controlled substance, the prescriber must manually print it out, sign it, and then fax it to the pharmacy.
Physicians will be required to have a 2-factor ID to access the system to send controlled substance prescriptions electronically. True or False
True
Can a physican change something on controlled substance electronic prescription once it has been transmitted?
No, Once transmitted “signed” by the prescriber, nothing can be changed by the physician.
- Once the prescription is transmitted, the physician may not print out the prescription. However, they can print it out as a “copy” for their own records, but it must be marked as a “copy”.
What happens if an electronic transmission fails? What must the prescription contain? What must the pharmacy do?
If an electronic transmission fails, it must contain a notice that the transmission has failed, including which pharmacy, the date and time of the transmission. If a pharmacy receives a written Rx with this warning on it, they must verify that it was not filled from the transmitted version. This may require a call to the pharmacy where the transmission failed to verify they did not fill it.
A physician is trying to send an e-script to Walmart and the transmission failed. The physician can print out the prescription, date it and sign it and give it ot the patient as a paper prescription. Pharmacist must do what?
Pharmacist must check profile to make sure it hasn’t been filled already
1. check database to make sure it hasnt been filled
2. call pharmacy where the transmission failed to verify they did not refill it
Are post-dated prescriptions legal?
No, Physicians must date the prescription on the date it was signed. Physicians must write in the direction “do not fill until date” if they don’t want the patient to have a prescription filled until a later date.
What is the “do not fill until” limit for schedule II prescriptions?
90 day supply
