O2 delivery devices Flashcards
Delivers oxygen concentrations of 22-50% (low-flow oxygen)
Pts. non critical with minor breathing
To deliver O2 at this rate and %, which O2 device should be used?
Using a nasal cannulae,
Range of flow rate for simple face mask?
Max FiO2?
5L/min - 15L/min
Max FiO2 of approx 40-60%
Other name for reservoir mask?
Non-rebreathable mask
With a bag
% O2 and flow rate using a reservoir mask?
Use?
This type of mask delivers oxygen at concentrations between 60- 90% when used at a flow rate of 10–15 l/min.³
Use: Trauma and emergencies
What is a venturi mask?
The venturi mask, also known as an air-entrainment mask, is a medical device to deliver a known oxygen concentration to patients on controlled oxygen therapy.
A Venturi mask will give an accurate concentration of oxygen to the patient regardless of oxygen flow rate
When is a venturi mask indicated?
They are suitable for critically ill patients patients needing a known concentration of oxygen between 24-60%.
24% and 28% Venturi masks are particularly suited to those at risk of carbon dioxide retention (e.g. patients with COPD).
Define hypoxia?
Lack of oxygen in a particular compartment (e.g. alveolar or tissue hypoxia).
Potentially due to hypoxaemia and anaemia
What is hypoxaemia?
Low PaO2
Also measured in relation to oxyhaemoglobin
How does hypoxia initially present?
Brain = most sensitive organ Mild symptoms: -Memory loss -Reduced mobility ability -Concentration loss Severe symptoms: -Coma, seizure, apnea
O2 sat targets for COPD patient?
88-92%
In addition to the pts identity, date & signature of the clinical, what other 3 details should be clearly outlined in all prescriptions for oxygen?
Starting dose, initial mode of delivery & whether the oxygen therapy should be continuous or as-required.
