General Anaesthesia Flashcards
3 commonly used IV induction agents?
Propofol
Thiopentone
Etomidate
Name 4 inhalational agents?
Nitrous oxide
Isoflurane
Sevoflurane
Desflurane
Used to induce anaesthesia in children
More commonly used to maintain anaesthesia
Define GA
Reversible, drug induced loss of consciousness, usually to allow a surgical procedure to be performed.
Use of entonox?
50:50 nitrous: oxygen
For analgesia, labour and trauma
MoA of anaesthetics?
Allosterically activate the GABAa receptor
This allows Cl- to enter the cell –> INHIBITION NEURONAL EXCITABILITY
Action of ketamine and NO
Inhibit the NMDA (glut, +ve) receptors which would normally excite neuro-transmission
Learning point:
Virtually all anaesthetic agents will to a greater or lesser effect have a negative inotropic effect on the heart and will reduce systemic vascular resistance.
Exception: ??
Ketamine
