O - Solubility product Flashcards
What is solubility?
The maximum amount of solid which will dissolve in a certain solvent.
What is the maximum amount of solid which will dissolve in a certain solvent called?
The solubility.
When will a solution become saturated?
When the water has dissolved as much of the solid as it can hold.
What does it mean is a solution is saturated?
You can continue adding extra solid but none will dissolve as the water has dissolved as much of the solid as it can hold.
What does solubility change with?
Temperature.
What is established when a sparingly soluble solid is dissolved in water to give a saturated solution?
An equilibrium between the undissolved solid and the dissolved ions.
What does ‘sparingly soluble’ mean?
It only dissolves a little bit.
What do compounds that are sparingly soluble dissolve to give?
30-100 parts solvent to 1 part solute, which is roughly 10-30 g dm^-3 in water.
What aren’t included in the expression for Kc?
Solids.
What is the equilibrium constant for a saturated solution of sparingly soluble solid in water called?
The solubility product.
What is the solubility product?
The equilibrium constant for a saturated solution of sparingly soluble solid in water.
What do Kc and Ksp have the same?
Formula.
What should the expression for Ksp include?
State symbols.
What does Ksp always have the same value for?
A given solution at a given temperature.
What can you use to work out Ksp?
The solubility product.
