The Missoula floods carved out the “Channeled Scablands” and the rest of the Columbia and Willamette River Valleys. The result is the deposit of beneficial alluvial soils on top of the basalt bedrock from ancient lava flows. When the Cordillean ice sheet retracted, it formed an ice dam at the Missoula Glacial Lake. When the dam broke, the resulting deluge released 10 times the force of all of the world’s rivers combined. The wall of water was 800 feet high and moved at speeds of 50-60mph until it broke through to the ocean. The path it took carved out what is today the Columbia River.
