Q

Describe the current VDP under the 2012 system, please be specific.

A

Grosse Lage-Grand Crus (max. 50 hl/ha) grapes harvested by hand, minimum
must weight equivalent to Spätlese, from top sites, and the wines may be dry
(“GG”) may not contain more than 9 g/l of residual sugar, or sweet (labeled by
Prädikat), only one dry wine may be produced in each of the top vineyards.
Erste Lage-Premier Cru(max. 60 hl/ha)The Grosses Gewächs category is reserved
for Grosse Lage, so producers of Erste Lage dry wines must label their products
as “trocken” instead. In addition, while all VDP members are committed to
“Grosse Lage”, individual member organizations in each anbaugebiet may choose
whether or not to develop an “Erste Lage” designation.
The former Erste Lage logo of the number 1 and cluster of grapes will now be applied to the Grosse Lage wines.
Ortswein: Village Wines (max. 60 hl/ha)- Must be produced from typical varietals and from a single village.
Gutswein: Regional Wines (max. 75 hl/ha)-may be produced from grapes sourced from a single anbaugebiet.
