Q
For these AVA / area, give the dominant soil component:
•	Sta. Rita Hills
•	Calistoga
•	Edna Valley
•	Rutherford
•	Monte Bello
•	Monterrey
•	Chalone
•	Mount Harlan
•	Arroyo Seco
•	Russian River Valley
A
  • Sta. Rita Hills = diatomaceous soils, which are fossilized seashells with a mix of sandy loams and alluvial deposits
  • Calistoga = almost all volcanic – rocks, stones and cobble-littered loam soils on the hillside / heavier clay and loam on the valley floor
  • Edna Valley = shallow, well-drained soils heavy in both volcanic and sedimentary sediment (sand, seashells, whale fossils) – a chain of volcanic cones called the Nine Sisters stretches from Edna into the sea
  • Rutherford = western soils are gravelly-sandy and alluvial, with moderate fertility ; eastern soils are more volcanic
  • Monte Bello = clay loam soil with fractured limestone
  • Monterrey = predominantly sandy
  • Chalone = limestone and quartz
  • Mount Harlan = limestone (calcium carbonate)
  • Arroyo Seco = “Greenfield potatoe” (for the gravelly soil and the name of the town within the AVA), alluvial deposit (gravel, rock and sand)
  • Russian River Valley = Fertile alluvial soils, such as “Goldridge” sandy loam, characterize the valley

23
Q

Which one of these AVAs is the warmest, Santa Lucia Highlands or San Antonio Valley?

A

San Antonio. Located closer to the Monterey Bay and at slightly higher altitude, Santa Lucia Highlands, experiences its maritime influence (late afternoon guts and evening fog blowing in, huge diurnal temperature swing) bringing the temperatures rarely above 57F during the growing season. San Antonio gets a little fog and wind, but the valley is 20 degrees warmer during summer time. Santa Lucia is thus more suitable and planted with chardonnay and pinot, while you find more cabernet and syrah in San Antonio.

26
Q

Match the vintage with the description for the North Coast production

  1. 1985
  2. 1989
  3. 1998

a. Terrible weather was a problem in the north, the first of the El Nino vintages, this one was cold, rainy, atypical, and late.
b. An excellent year with many top-quality wines: an early bud break, a cool, long growing season and a beautiful September. The fruit maturity was achieved at relatively moderate sugar levels and the acidity was textbook perfect for balance.
c. Called the “vintage from hell” by the press, the rain hit the Napa and Sonoma during harvest, producing some thin wines sometimes touched by grey rot

A

1985 – An excellent year with many top-quality wines: an early bud break, a cool, long growing season and a beautiful September. The fruit maturity was achieved at relatively moderate sugar levels and the acidity was textbook perfect for balance.
1989 – Called the “vintage from hell” by the press, rain hit the Napa and Sonoma during harvest, producing some
