NVS Video Characteristics Flashcards
Frozen Video
Loss of video link communication & results in a VIDEO FROZEN message in the status section of symbology. Video will freeze if missing frames are 10. Video will be removed if count not restored in 4 sec. Cycle NVS mode to OFF and back. If not restored follow PNVS failure CL.
Degraded Video
Due to code word error, missing column count, or cyclic redundancy check in TADS/PNVS. Result is all or portion of video image degraded & Video Degr message. If degradation is not night-flight safe, execute PNVS failure procedure.
Loss of BUS communication
The affected turret will move fixed forward within 5 seconds. If DTV is selected, FLIR wide FOV will be selected.
Dead Channel
This results in a failed detector and is evident by a horizontal line in the video
Flashing Channels
This is caused by intermittent detectors and appears as horizontal broken or line segments. The broken line segments may alternate between black and white and may also flash.
Cloud Shifting
This appears as a lighter cloud in the horizon as a result of dynamic range compression and IR detector non-uniformity. The non-uniform horizontal lines appear as a cloud which may move up and down through the lighter regions in the horizon caused by DRC algorithm
Dynamic Range compression (DRC) Effect
When viewing vertical scene contents (like a runway), the near and far areas of the object will appear in varying shades. This shading will not remain fixed; instead, it will move vertically and may appear as a light fog in the scene.
Halo Effect
Occurs from image enhancements in low contrast scenes (ex. flying formation, aircraft above horizon will appear to have bright borders)
NOE Coupling
FLIR effect from terrain flight. Viewing features above sensor will see those objects change “color”.
NVD (NVG) considerations
Use degrades distance estimation and depth perception (compared to FLIR). A/C in flight may appear closer due to Nav lights. Weapon flash may impair or shutdown NVG
NVG Training restrictions
Both Crew must be current.
PNVS/TADS are still primary and must remain functional.
Crew Members may only use NVD (NVG) one at a time.
