NVLMG scene by scene Flashcards
Chapter 1-3 - Part 1
The narrator, Kathy H., recalls her time at Hailsham, an English boarding school for clones who are destined to donate their organs. Kathy introduces her friends Tommy and Ruth. Tommy struggles with emotional outbursts and is often bullied. Kathy notices a close bond between Tommy and Ruth, but hints at a deeper connection between her and Tommy. Hailsham students are raised with special care, though they have only vague knowledge of their ultimate fate.
Chapter 4-6 - Part 1
Kathy describes how art plays an important role at Hailsham, particularly the Gallery, where the students’ best artwork is sent. Miss Lucy, one of the guardians (teachers), tells Tommy that his art doesn’t matter, breaking the school’s usual encouragement of creativity. Kathy becomes curious about the meaning behind their art and their place in society. Tommy and Ruth’s relationship begins to grow closer.
Chapter 7-9 - Part 1
The students gradually become aware that they are clones, destined to donate their organs and die young. Kathy grows closer to Ruth and Tommy, though she feels a growing tension between them. Miss Lucy later tells Tommy that students must create art to reveal their souls, leading to his confusion and inner conflict about his role in life.
Chapter 10-12 - Part 2
After Hailsham, Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy move to the Cottages, a halfway house where they live more freely but with the awareness of their fate. Ruth becomes fixated on fitting in with the older veterans, leading to friction between her and Kathy. Kathy begins contemplating her feelings for Tommy, though Ruth maintains control of their relationship.
Chapter 13-14 - Part 2
Kathy explores the idea of deferrals, a rumored program that allows couples in love to delay their donations. The students believe that creating art at Hailsham might be a way to prove the depth of their emotions and secure a deferral. Ruth and Tommy’s relationship becomes strained, while Kathy begins thinking about becoming a carer, a clone who looks after donors.
Chapter 15-17 - Part 2
Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy search for a “possible” (the person they were cloned from), leading them to a disappointing encounter. Tensions rise between Kathy and Ruth over their shared past with Tommy. Kathy decides to leave the Cottages to become a carer, and she grows distant from Ruth and Tommy.
Chapter 18-20 - Part 3
Years later, Kathy is a successful carer, looking after donors as they go through their operations. She reunites with Ruth, who is frail after completing several donations. Ruth expresses regret over coming between Kathy and Tommy, encouraging Kathy to seek out Tommy and pursue the possibility of deferrals.
Chapter 21-22 - Part 3
Kathy and Tommy visit Madame and Miss Emily, the former headmistress of Hailsham, to ask about deferrals. They learn that deferrals never existed and that Hailsham was an experiment to show that clones have souls. The school’s focus on art was intended to prove this to society, but the experiment has since been shut down. Kathy and Tommy are devastated, knowing their fate is inevitable.
Chapter 23 - Part 3
Tommy completes his final donation, and Kathy reflects on their time together. She accepts her fate as a donor, resigning herself to the cycle that was set for her from birth. The novel ends with Kathy alone, standing in a field, imagining the past, and preparing for her own donations.
