Nutritive Value Flashcards

1
Q

What are the 2 main goals of ruminant nutrition?

A
  1. Improve the amount of nutrients extracted per unit feed and the efficiency of nutrient utilization
  2. Improve the efficiency of use of absorbed nutrients

Q

What is the difference between apparent and true digestibility?

A

Apparent: takes nutrients in feces as is
True: accounts for endogenous secretions

Q

Given that 1000g of feed DM contained 25% of a nutrient and 170g of fecal DM contained 75% of that same nutrient, calculate total tract digestibility of that feed?

A

=127.5/250 =0.51% undigested
= 122.5/250 = 0.49% digested

Q

What factors affects digestibility and how? (6)

A
  1. Lignin (decreases D)
  2. Preservation (if ensiled decrease D) (if alkali or acid treat, increase D)
  3. Particle size (smaller, increase D)
  4. Associative effects (depends)
  5. Feed intake
  6. Rate of passage (more time, more D)

Q

Why is knowledge about an animals feed intake important?

A
  1. Intake directly influences production
  2. Forage utilization
  3. Need to know intake to formulate rations
  4. Intake changes are associated with metabolic disorders

Q

What are some ways feed intake is expressed?

A
  1. DM basis
  2. % of body
  3. As a function of maintenance requirements
  4. Relative to a test feed

Q

What factors affect feed intake and how?

A
  1. Gut fill (stretch receptors in rumen)
  2. Animal factors (size, age, health, etc)
    3.Palatbility
  3. Feed quality (ie. spoilage)
  4. Choices

Q

What factors are affected by feed intake?

A
  1. Energy needs (less efficient digestion as they eat more)
  2. Growth of rumen bacteria
  3. Rate of passage (more = faster)
  4. Digestibility
  5. Gut fill
  6. Performance
