Building blocks for all cells - muscle tissues, organs, skin, blood

0.8g/kg, 1.4-1.7g/kg (athletes)

15-20% of total EI
Is there a recommendations for increased/high protein intakes in the diet?
No result in further muscle mass or strength with increased intakes
- aa will be deaminated and the C skeleton is utilised for ATP production/gluconeogenesis - N is excreted in urine
No evidence for >2g/kg - this is optimal for muscle hypertrophy during energy balance/excess
What is the evidence for an increased protein intake in strength/power athletes?
Increased rate of protein synthesis
Improves net protein balance following resistance
Aids in recovery
What are the suggestions regarding CHO and protein intake post exercise?
Consumption of both may enhance glycogen storage
