Nutrition -HMB Flashcards
What is HMB?
β-Hydroxy β-Methylbutyrate - a metabolite of BCAA - leucine
What is the role of HMB?
It is needed by the body to protect and repair muscle tissue
- it’s thought to do this by slowing muscle protein breakdown and speeding protein synthesis, and also by preserving the structural integrity of your muscle cells
What is HMB’s role of lean muscle mass and strength?
Suggestions of increasing LMM and strength while suppressing muscle damage
What is HMB’s function with anticatabolism?
Minimises protein breakdown and cellular damage with HI
What challenges arise with evidence of HMB supplementation?
An explanation of plausible mechanism of action
Supplementation with resistance exercises
Common dosages
What are the considerations required for HMB’s mechanism?
What happens with exercise?
Do we need exercise to see a result or is supplementation alone beneficial?
What are the long and short term effects?
How much endogenous synthesis occurs each day of HMB?
0.2-0.4g/kg
