What is kwashiorkor?
Generalised oedema + muscle wasting due to protein deficiency Flaky paint skin rash with hyperkeratosis + desquamation Angular stomatitis Hyperpigmentation (black enamel paint)
What is the pathology of vitamin D deficiency?
Causes low calcium Triggers secretion of parathyroid hormone Normalises calcium but demineralises bone PTH also causes low phosphate
S+S Vit D deficiency?
Rickets - bony deformity Symptoms of hypocalcaemia (seizures, stridor, apnoea) Rickets: bow legs in toddlers, knock kneed in older children
What is osteomalacia?
Failure of mature bone to mineralise
What is rickety rosary?
Thickening of metaphyses where growth is most rapid Wrists, ankles + costochondral joints
S+S rickets
Ping pong ball sensation of skull (craniotabes) Wide ankles + wrists FTT Bowed legs
