What are the fat soluble vitamins? What is a bebefit of fat solubility? What is a danger?
Vitamins A,D,E, and K. B/c these vitamins are stored in the fat there is rarely a shortage. B/c these vitamins are stored in the fat if you ingest too much it is easy to overdose
What is Vitamin A necessary for?
Tissue integrity and growth
What are two areas where vitamin D is very important?
- Vit D is integral in calcium uptake, bone maintenance and growth
- Vit D is also essential for nervous system function. Used in MS patients and similar neurological disorders.
Name two water soluble vitamins? What is a problem with water solubility and what is an advantage?
Vitamin C and B. Water solubility causes a lack of storage and quick excretion of vitamins, thus, we are susceptible to vitamin shortages but rarely to overdoses.
What role do vitamins B & C play?
Necessary for tissue integrity, healing, and maintenance. Growth of hair, nails, and skin.
Deficiences in B vitamins Riboflavin (B2), Niacin (B3), Pyridoxine (B6), and Cobalamin (B12) cause what?
Inflammatory tongue lesions (glossitis), Atrophy, and Burning tongue. Also, Lip and mouth lesions (stomatitis).
What B vitamin is most commonly missing from vegetarian diets?
B12, Cobalmine. B/c cobalmine is found mostly in meat, fish and dairy products. Acquired by vegetarians often through enriched bread, cereals or tablet supplements.
What dental disease is vitamin C deficiency associated with?
Periodontal disease. b/c vitamin C deficiency results in scurvy, which includes red inflamed gingiva and mouth ulcerations. Vit C supplementation found to speed tissue healing after care.
