Most common; occurs with physical exertion and relieved by rest
Exertional Dyspnea
Occurs when the body uses more oxygen and makes more carbon dioxide - during exercise or physical activity
Exertional Dyspnea
SOB when in reclining/lying position; relieved by sitting up
Heart disease or COPD
Orthopnea
SOB with sudden onset; occurs during sleep or at night
Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea
Awakens patient with feeling of suffocation; relieved by sitting up
Heart failure
Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea
Pneumothorax, air obstruction, ARF, ARDS, or pulmonary embolism
Sudden Dyspnea
Asthma or COPD; due to bronchoconstriction
Dyspnea with wheezes
Popular test for clubbing of the fingers; A small diamond-shaped “window” is normally apparent between the nailbeds
Schamroth’s Test or Schamroth’s Window Test
Coughing with blood
Hemoptysis
Bluish discoloration seen around the mouth, on inside the lips, or on the fingernails may occur when a person is not getting as much oxygen as needed
Cyanosis
Normal Breath Sounds
- Vesicular (entire lung field) - low pitched
- Bronchial (over the trachea) - high pitched
- Bronchovesicular (over the main bronchus) - medium pitched
