NUR 116 Clinical - Blood Pressure Flashcards
What equipment is needed to take blood pressure?
Sphygmomanometer, blood pressure cuff and stethoscope
What are the larger and smaller areas of the stethoscope called?
Larger: Diaphragm
Smaller: Bell
What is blood pressure?
The force exerted by blood against the vessel walls
How is blood pressured measured (written)?
Systolic Pressure over Diastolic Pressure
What is Systolic BP?
When the ventricles contract = Peak pressure
What is Diastolic B
Pressure exerted against the vessel walls when the ventricles relax
What is pulse pressure?
The difference between the systolic and diastolic pressure reading
What is normal BP
Less than 120 over less than 80
What is elevated BP?
Higher than 120-129 over 80 or higher
What is Stage I Hypertension?
130-139 over 80-89
What is Stage II Hypertension?
140 or higher over 90 or higher
What is a Hypertensive Crisis?
180 or higher over 120 or higher
What is hypotension?
Low BP, Systolic BP less than 90
What is orthostatic hypotension?
When Blood pressure drops when you move
How to measure a cuff?
Cuff should be 40% of the circumference of mid part of the limb
Bladder should be 80% of the arm (around the arm)
