Nucleic acids - ATP Flashcards
what are the properties of ATP?
ATP stores/releases small, manageable amounts of energy at a time so no energy is wasted
easily broken down so energy is easily released in a single reaction
energy transfer from ATP is direct to the reaction requiring energy
small, soluble molecule so easily diffused, transported around the cell
can transfer energy to another molecule by transferring one of its phosphate groups
a common source of energy as it is the universal currency in living organisms
How does ATP release energy?
ATP into ADP
hydrolysis with atpase (enzyme)
ADP+P into ATP
condensation with atpsynthase (enzyme)
What is phospholyration?
addition of an inorganic phosphate group to a molecule
What do cells require energy for?
metabolism
anabolic reactions - making big molecules from smaller ones (protien synthesis)
catabolic reactions - breaking big molecules into smaller ones
active transport - substances are moved against the gradient
cell division
activation of molecules
Structure of ATP?
nitrogen containing base (adenine)
ribose sugar
3 phosphate groups
What is ATP?
able to supply cells with an energy form they can use
it is the universal energy currency for all living organisms
