Nucleic Acids Flashcards
Nucleic acid
Most important macromolecule for the continuity of life
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid.
The genetic material in all living organisms.
RNA
Ribonucleic acid
Mostly involved in protein synthesis
Nucleotide
Makes up DNA/RNA
Each nucleotide in DNA contains 1 of 4 possible nitrogenous bases:
1. Adenine (A) 2. Guanine (G) 3. Thiamine (T). 4. Cytosine (C)
Each nucleotide in RNA contains 1 of 4 possible nitrogenous bases
1. Adenine (A) 2. guanine (G) 3. cytosine (C) 4. uracil (U)
The pentose sugar (any simple sugar with 5 carbons) in DNA is deoxribose, in RNA its ribose.
A phosphate functional group is present.
What is DNA comprised of
Thiamine, guanine, cytosine, adenine
What is RNA comprised of
Adenine, guanine, cytosine, uracil
