Carbohydrates Flashcards
Carbohydrate
Carbon (c) oxygen (o) hydrogen (h)
monosaccharides
disaccharides
polysaccharies
Monosaccharide
(Mono=one) simple sugar
The monomer that makes up carbohydrate polymers
Most end in -ose. Glucose, galactose, fructose
Glucose C6H12O6
Disaccharide
(Di=two) when 2 monosaccharides undergo dehydration reaction. The bond that forms between them is Glycosidic bond. Lactose, maltose, sucrose.
Polysaccharide
(Poly=many) provide structural support or serve as storage molecules in organisms. Starch, glycogen, chitin, cellulose.
Starch
Plants store extra glucose as starch
Cellulose
Comprises a plant’s cell wall providing support
Glycogen
Storage form of glucose in animals and fungi. The animal equivalent of starch. Extra glucose is stored in liver and muscles.
Chitin
Structural support for animals (lobsters & insects) and fungi. Animal version of cellulose.
