Endomembrane System Flashcards
Endomembrane system
Group of membranes and organelles in eukaryotic cells that work together to modify, package, and transport proteins and lipids.
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
Series of interconnected membranous sacs and tubules that modifies proteins and synthesizes lipids.
Rough ER
Folds and processes proteins and packages them in vesicles;
Vesicles commonly go to the Golgi apparatus (shipping center)
Membranous sac with ribosomes attached
Smooth ER
Membranous sacs that make lipids. No ribosomes.
Synthesizes lipids, carbs and steroid hormones
Detox of medications and poison
Stores calcium
Golgi apparatus
Sorting, tagging, packing and distributing lipids and proteins
Lysosomes
Contain hydrolitic digestive enzymes for digesting all sorts of molecules, including foreign substances, damaged organelles, and molecules to be destroyed.
Cytoskeleton
Network of protein fibers that maintain cells shape, secure organelles in positions, allow cytoplasm and vesicles to move within cell, enable cells within multicellular organisms to move
3 types of cytoskeleton fibers
Microfilaments
Intermediate filaments
Microtubules
Chloroplasts
Harvests light energy for plants
