Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Flashcards
1
Q
When doing proton NMR what is the solvent used and why?
A
CDCL₃ because deuterium atoms absorb at a completely different frequency
2
Q
What is added to the sample being analysed and why?
A
tetramethlysilane TMS to calibrate the spectrum and it is volatile and non toxic and it has a small peak far from everything else
3
Q
How many neighbours does a singlet have?
A
0
4
Q
How many neighbours does a doublet have?
A
1
5
Q
How many neighbours does a triplet have?
A
2
6
Q
How many neighbours does a quartet have?
A
3
7
Q
Why use CDCl3 and CCl4?
A
CDCl3 is a polar molecule and is a good solvent for polar organic molecules
CCl4 is a non polar molecule and is a good solvent for non polar organic molecules
