Q

As you move down group 2 what happens to the melting points?

A

Decreases

weaker metallic bonds as the atomic radius is larger

8
Q

Why does the melting point of group 2 elements decrease as you move down the group?

A

The size of the atoms increases and so the attraction between the delocalised electrons and the positive metal ions decreases and so the energy required to break those bonds decreases.

Q

Why is titanium an expensive metal to extract?

A

cost of Mg
batch process-labour intensive
needs to happen in an inert atmosphere
high temperatures are needed for both steps

16
Q

Why is titanium a useful metal?

A

abundant
low density
corrosion resistant

17
Q

Why cant titanium be extracted by electrolysis?

A

it has to be very pure

18
Q

What are the two steps of extracting titanium? (equations)

A

TiO₂ + 2Cl₂ + 2C = TiCl₄ + CO

TiCl₄ + 2Mg = Ti + 2MgCl₂

19
Q

Why is Mg(OH)₂ preferred in medicine compared to CaCO₃?

A

Mg(OH)₂ doesn’t form carbon dioxide when reacting with an acid

20
Q

When reacting Ba with H₂SO₄ why is the reaction very slow?

A

When the barium reacts with the acid a layer of barium sulphate solid forms around the barium block protecting it from the acid, slowing down the reaction.

21
Q

How does magnesium act in cold water and why?

A

It doesn’t react as a coating of magnesium hydroxide forms around the outside which prevents further reactions.
