Kinetics and Rate Equations Flashcards
What is the definition of rate of reaction?
The change in concentration per unit time
What is the initial rate of reaction when referring to a graph?
The gradient when it is steepest
What is activation energy?
The minimum energy required for which particles need to collide and start a reaction.
From looking at an energy against progress of reaction curve what section denotes the activation energy?
The distance between the reactants and the peak.
Where is the most probable energy on a maxwell boltzmann distribution?
At the peak
Where is the mean energy on a maxwell boltzmann distribution?
Just to the right of the peak.
What effect does increasing the temperature have on the MBD graph?
It shifts to the right with the same area so the peak height decreases
What effect does increasing the concentration have on the MBD
The peak doesnt move however the area under the graph increases and vice versa for lowering the concentration.
Why does increasing temperature increase rate of reaction?
more proportion of particles have a higher energy which is greater than the activation energy and so there are more frequent successful collisions.
How does a catlaylst effect the MBD?
It doesnt change the shape at all and the activation energy is just lowered.
What is the definiton of a catalyst?
A substance which increases the rate of reaction by lowering the activation energy and providing an alternative route with a different mechanism and remaining unused at the enfof the reaction.
