Nuclear Decay Flashcards
1
Q
Nuclear Decay
A
Conserved during Nuclear decay.
Mass & Energy, as they are closely related (E = mc2)
Momentum
Charge
2
Q
Activity
A
The rate at which a source emits radioactive particles.
One particle emitted per second is called a Becquerel (Bq).
3
Q
Decay constant (λ)
A
Relates Activity to the number of nuclei (N) by the equation A = λN.
4
Q
Half-life
A
The time taken for the Activity of the source to decrease by one half.
Also the time taken for the number of radioactive nuclei to reduce by one half.
5
Q
Binding Energy
A
The energy required to separate an atom into its constituent parts.
6
Q
Binding Energy per Nucleon
A
A means of comparing relative binding energy regarding the number of nucleons.
