Nuclear Chemistry - Unit 3 Flashcards
What do Alpha particles consist of?
2 protons and 2 neutrons, giving them a mass of 4
What are beta particles and where are they emitted from
electrons and the nucleus
What is Alpha radiation stopped by ?
Paper
What is Beta radiation stopped by?
Aluminium
What is gamma radiation stopped by?
Lead
What is Alphas charge ?
2+
What is betas charge
1-
What is the definition of a half life?
the time it takes for half a sample to decay OR time it takes for the activity to reduce to half its original value
what is a use of a radioisotope?
A radioisotope can be used for medical purposes, it can be injected into the body to destroy cancer cells which cause a tumor. Short half lifes are better for medical purposes as they are less damaging
where does radioactivity occur ?
nucleus
