Bonding - Unit 1 Flashcards
What is a molecule ?
Two or more atoms joined together by covalent bonds , same element
What is a covalent bond ?
A shared pair of electrons between two non metals
How does covalent bonding work ?
As the positive nuclei is attracted to the negative electrons , however this works both ways creating a tug of war effect.
What are the diatomic elements, draw the diagram for them ?
Iodine, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Chlorine, Oxygen, Bromine, Flourine
What is the difference between a molecule and a compound ?
molecule - same elements
compound - different elements
Draw and name the four bonding structures ?
Tetrahederal, trigonal pyramidal, angular, linear
What is an ionic bond ?
The electrostatic force of attraction between the positive metal ion and the negative non metal ions
How are ions formed?
Metals gain positive ions when they lose and electron
Non - metals gain negative electrons by gaining electrons
What does the exception of graphite mean ?
Graphite can conduct electricity as it has delocalised electrons
What is the conductivity, and mp,bp of a metal bond?
conductivity - yes
mp, bp - high
What is the conductivity, and mp,bp of an ionic bond?
conductivity - when molten and solution form
mp, bp - high
What is the conductivity, and mp,bp of a Covalent molecular bond ?
conductivity - no
mp, bp - low
What is the conductivity, and mp,bp of a Covalent network bond ?
conductivity - no
mp, bp - high
What are three metal bases?
metal oxide, metal carbonate, metal hyrdroxide
