Metals - Unit 3 Flashcards
What is the definition of metallic bonding?
An array of positively charged ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons.
How can metals conduct?
The electrons are free to move from one ion to another.
What is the reaction of metals and oxygen?
metal + oxygen = metal oxide
what is the reaction for metal and water?
metal + water + metal hydroxide = hydrogen
What is the reaction for metal + acid
metal + acid = salt + Hydrogen
what 4 metals have no reaction?
Gold, sliver, platinum and mercury
All metals above what will react with acid?
Hydrogen
All metals above what will react with water?
Magnesium
What is oxidation and what do the equations look like?
Oxidation is loss of electrons
A + B = AB
What is reduction and what do the equations look like?
Reduction is gain of electrons
AB = A + B
What must you do to form a redox equation?
Multiply both equations until the electrons have the same value, cancel out.
What unreactive metals can be found in the earth crust as a whole metallic element
Silver and Gold
What is an ore?
A naturally occurring metal compound
What are the three extraction methods going from easiest to hardest?
Heat alone, Heat with Carbon, Electrolysis
What would be the general equation for a metal extracted with heating with carbon?
Metal Oxide + Carbon monoxide = metal + carbon dioxide
