What are RAW materials?
NATURAL materials such as wood and clay (and other things from nature) that can be made into other things
What are manufactured materials?
materials or useful things made by people from NATURAL or MAN-MADE materials
(when people change materials in different ways)
What is SAND and what can you make from it?
fine particles of broken rocks,
made by wind and moving water breaking down the rocks
Glass is manufactured from sand by heating the sand to melt and shape it
What is CLAY and what is it used for?
Clay consists of sand that is very fine, and is very malleable when wet.
CERAMICS are made from clay. Clay can be shaped into bricks, pots, mugs and other crockery and then fired to make it stronger and harder
What does malleable mean?
it means that something can be shaped easily
What are ceramic objects?
things made from hardened clay and sand
What does it mean for something to be brittle?
it easily breaks into pieces
What is coal?
a hard, black substance that comes from the earth, formed from the reamins of trees and plants which grew millions of years ago
List the types of things that can be manufactured from coal & oil
Coal and oil are used to make PLASTICS, PAINTS and fibres for FABRICS
What is plastic?
a material made from substances found in coal and oil
What is fibre?
fibres are strings or threads
Name a natural fibre that we use to knit or weave into fabrics
Wool is natural fibre that comes from sheep that is rolled or spun to make yarn for weaving and knitting
(Cotton is a natural fibre that come from a plant that we also use for making fabric.)
What is paper made from?
wood and fibre from plants
Name fibres made from oil?
NYLON and POLYESTER are man-made fibres manufactured from oil, that are made into yarns and fabrics or used to make pillows and duvets
What is leather?
a soft, flexible material made from animal hide (animal skin)
