NSRP Flashcards

1
Q

Function of the NSRP

A
  1. Produce steam from nuclear fission

Q

State the operation of the NSRP (primary loop)

A
  1. Uranium fuel is engaged in nuclear fission which produces heat energy
  2. Water is heated in the primary circuit via thermal conduction
  3. Hot primary coolant is pumped into the SG
  4. Hot water flows through hundreds of tubes within the SG, this heat is then transferred to feed water in the SG
  5. The primary coolant is then pumped to the reactor to be re-heated, thus cooling the core
  6. The cycle repeats

Q

State the operation of the NSRP (Secondary loop)

A
  1. Feed water evaporates in the SG creating pressurised steam
  2. Steam is forced into the main engines and TG’s via the main steam system pipework
  3. The steam rotates the turbines in the main engine and TG’s producing propulsion and electricity
  4. Waste steam is condensed in the condensers and converted back into feed water
  5. Feed water is pumped back into the SG’s
  6. The cycle repeats
