NSRP Flashcards
1
Q
Function of the NSRP
A
- Produce steam from nuclear fission
- Provide steam to the steam turbines for propulsion
- Provide steam to the TG’s to produce electricity
2
Q
List the major components of the NSRP
A
- PWR
- Control rods
- Primary rods
- MIV’s (main isolating valves)
- MCP’s (main coolant pumps)
- Pressuriser
- Steam generator
- MUD vessel
- HPDHR tank
- Main feed system
- Main steam system
3
Q
State the operation of the NSRP (primary loop)
A
- Uranium fuel is engaged in nuclear fission which produces heat energy
- Water is heated in the primary circuit via thermal conduction
- Hot primary coolant is pumped into the SG
- Hot water flows through hundreds of tubes within the SG, this heat is then transferred to feed water in the SG
- The primary coolant is then pumped to the reactor to be re-heated, thus cooling the core
- The cycle repeats
4
Q
List reactor scram examples
A
- Loss of heat sink
- Unidentified steam leaks
- Loss of reactor control
- Primary coolant leak
- Parameters being exceeded
5
Q
State the operation of the NSRP (Secondary loop)
A
- Feed water evaporates in the SG creating pressurised steam
- Steam is forced into the main engines and TG’s via the main steam system pipework
- The steam rotates the turbines in the main engine and TG’s producing propulsion and electricity
- Waste steam is condensed in the condensers and converted back into feed water
- Feed water is pumped back into the SG’s
- The cycle repeats
6
Q
What does self sustaining mean?
A
When the TG’s provide power to the boat without SS
7
Q
What is the safety group?
A
The control rod group which has the biggest effect on criticality
