NSAIDs / Gout Flashcards
Aspirin
NSAID
Acetylsalicylic Acid
MOA: irreversible COX inhibitor
Low dose: analgesic, antipyretic
High dose: anti-inflammatory
SE: prolongs bleeding time, upset GI (PUD)
Salicylic Acid

NSAID
MOA: nonselective COX inhibitor
Celecoxib
NSAID
MOA: COX-2 selective inhibitor
(analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory)
SE: CV thrombotic events
Acetaminophen
Not an NSAID
Analgesic/Antipyretic only
MOA: unclear
Rx: frequently used in children and elderly
SE: hepatotoxicity
Colchicine
Rx: acute gout Tx
MOA: ↓ pain and inflammation (inhibits leukocyte migration and phagocytosis)
SE: severe diarrhea
Allopurinol
Xanthine Oxidase inhibitor
MOA: blocks conversion of xanthine -> uric acid
Rx: in b/w gout attacks
Febuxostat
Xanthine Oxidase inhibitor
MOA: blocks conversion of xanthine -> uric acid
Rx: allopurinol intolerance
Probenecid
Uricosuric
MOA: inhibits tubular absorption of uric acid -> ↑ renal clearance
Gout prophylaxis only
