NS -7 trigeminal system Flashcards
describe the trigeminal sensory pathway
- primary afferent neurone
- trigeminal ganglion
- CNS
- Trigeminal sensory nuclei
- trigeminal-thalamic tract
- thalamus
- somatosensory cortex
what are the components of the peripheral trigeminal nerve?
3 divisions
- opthalmic
- maxillary
- mandibular
1 ganglion
- trigeminal
2 roots
- sensory
- motor
where the V sensory and V motor root located in the brainstem?
pons
name the nuclei of the trigeminal sensory nuclear complex
- trigeminal Main sensory Nucleus
- Nucleus Oralis
- Nucleus interpolaris
- nucleus caudalis
what is the route of the nerve fibres that enter the trigeminal spinal tract?
nerve fibres enter and pass through trigeminal spinal tract and could synapse with any of the nucleus and will then cross over to the midline and head to thalamus
what nucleus could be damaged to a V tractotomy?
Nucleus caudalis
what is the result of V tractotomy of the nucleus caudalis?
Loss of ipsilateral facial pain, hot/cold
- however can still feel touch
what is N. caudalis a synapse for?
pain, hot and cold
what is site of synapses for oral and dental pain and reflexes? (nocicepitve stimuli)
Nucleus oralis
what is the result of damage to the Main Sensory Nuclei?
Ipsilateral loss of touch to face
- however can still feel pain, hot or cold
why is the Main sensory nucleus ‘probably’ the site for synapses for touch?
a small number of patients with small CNS lesions also have the same result of ipsilateral loss of touch to face
is there synapses in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus?
nope, nerve synapses in the V motor nucleus
list two features of the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) ?
Primary afferent cell bodies within the central nervous system
cell bodies for jaw muscle spindle afferents and some mechanoreceptive afferents from the PDL
where is the trigeminal motor nucleus located?
medial to the MSN in the pons
where does the trigeminal motor nucleus recieve input from?
mesencephalic nucleus and motor cortex
