N16 cranial nerve nuclei Flashcards
All cranial nerves exit ventrally except for one?
IV - trochlear nerve
name the 3 motor componenents
- Somatic motor
- visceral motor (parasympathetic)
- Branchio motor
list the cranial nerves which are somatic motor?
- oculomotor
- trochlear
- abducens
- hypoglossal
which somatic nerves are found in the midbrain?
oculomotor
trochlear
which somatic motor nerves are found in the pons?
abducens
hypoglossal
which muscles does the oculomotor nerve innervate?
skeletal muscles of levator palprebal
AO3 - SR, MR, IR
inferior oblique muscle
what is special about the trochlear nerve?
only cranial nerve to exit dorsally as all other exit ventrally and it crosses the midline
which muscles does the trochlear (IV) nerve supply?
Superior oblique
where is the trochlear nucleus found?
midbrain
where is the abducens found and what muscles do they innervate?
pons
Lateral rectal muscle of ipsilateral orbit
where is the hypoglossal nerve found and where is the nucleus located?
nerve is found in pons and nucleus is located in medulla (long thin nucleus)
which muscles does the hypoglossal nerve (somatic motor) innervate?
supplies 3/4 extrinsic muscles of the tongue
- genioglossus, hyoglossus and styloglossus
and all intrinsic muscles
what effect does left sided hypoglossal nerve palsy have?
patient complained of progressive difficulty with speech
recap the somatic motor cranial nerves?
III
IV
VI
XII
Which muscles are the visceral motor parasympathetic related to?
Glands/smooth muscle
