NS 13 - thermoreception Flashcards
what is thermoreception?
detection of non-noxiuos temp changes
what is the sensory result of thermoreception?
warm and cold sensation
what is the non-sensory result of thermoreception?
reflexes
is there a cold bias in the mouth?
5-10x more cold spots than hot spots
what is the major difference between thermoreception and nociception?
thermoreception has minimal modification at the first synapse whereas nociception has a significant modification at the first synapse
what are the similarites between thermoreception and nociception?
peripheral nerves
- free nerve endings
- Adelta and C fibres
central pathway
- 1st synapse in V nucleus caudalis (or spinal dorsal horn)
what are the dynamic properties of a warm receptor?
warming - increase frequency of AP
cooling - transient inhibition
what are the dynamic properties of the cold receptor?
warming - transient inhibition
cooling - increase frequency of AP
describe thermal transduction?
temperature causes membrane permeability change - receptor
