why is the author important
author matters for accuracy and meaning
Audience
Mark: non-jews (ppl who don’t understand customs, events, historical significance
why does time matter (2)
*matters to the significance of the writing
*would you want someone who was an eye-witness or someone 100+ yrs later
why does place matter (3)
*matters that these books historically line up with places in secular history
*helps reader understand cultural practices and people in the stories
*shapes worldview
Why should you read the book as a whole
small chapters are cherry picking verses
Specific genres: historical narrative vs. parable (3)
*historical narratives are factual and can be taken literally
*parables are not factual and cannot be taken literally
*important to know the difference so you understand what you are reading better
Intertextuality: typology
*when OT person, place, event, or institution somehow predicts something about Jesus’ life
*Ex. psalm predicting Jesus’ death: casting lots, crucifying him, etc.

Abraham sacrificing his son compared to God’s son Jesus being sacrificed
intertextuality: places ex
mountain in Abraham’s story was same as the one Jesus died on
intertextuality: events ex
passover practices of putting blood on door frame and if not first born dies. Jesus dies shortly after passover and was the 1st born of God
Direct prophecies
OT passages that talk about Jesus’ life
Allusions
NT writers referring back to OT prophecies and alluding that those OT writings are significant to what they are currently talking about
Comparing gospels w/ each other
comparing all the gospels to recognize that they were written in a context of writing one complete story, not one vs. the other
