What is the continental systems of 1806?

A

It was an idea of Napoleon, after he conquered a lot of Europe so he controlled them to stop the from banning from trading with Britain
From 1812-14 Britain went to war with America because of trade
Economically - not as much trade with others countries and can’t bring or sell anything
Socially- Quality of life decrease, not enough money to spend

A

People can’t afford as much food so less nutrition - 1800 -01
People couldn’t buy wheat or grain
- People did more jobs to compensate

A

It increased from £227 million in debt in 1793 to £902 million in debt in 1816

What happened to the prices of products?

A

Sugar, cotton, tea, timber, glass, metal bricks become more expensive in war so people houses were much worse and cramped
Some people became unemployed or underemployed so less textiles

A
  • Condition in cities decreased because the desire for weapons and uniform so there is a shift into the city so the houses were shoddy and badly built
  • Many people who stayed at home where employers cut wages because people were fighting or the products weren’t needed, like pottery

What happened to tax?

A
  • Taxes rose in war, people got less money and decreased quality of life
  • Rates meant only rich pay income tax, which was 1/3 of taxation
  • 2/3 of tax came from indirect tax (VAT) on beer, sugar, tea and anything not coming from directly from the salary
  • Poor still brought stuff and they were still affected

A
  • Individual farmers fenced off their properties, and they could do what they wanted
  • Broom time for farmers, accelerated from moving way from communal farms
